I started at 10:30, figured I’d have manual hubs in a couple hours.
Couldn’t get the hub cap off. Had to pack up my tools and stuff and go borrow a pipe wrench from my dad.
Couldn’t get the snap wring off the axle with needle nose pliers. Went to Home Depot because they showed snap ring pliers in stock. No snap ring pliers, or maybe they do, but they didn’t know what they were and didn’t want to help.
Off to Lordco. Found these lock ring pliers that seemed like they work better. They just barely work. Got the snap ring off, I can finally remove the hub.
But wait. The biggest hex driver I have is too small.
It’s been 5 hours of fucking around, it’s hot now, I’m accepting that the universe has decided I don’t get manual hubs today.
Time for a beer.

Well at least it’s not your only car.

Sorry things didn’t work out for you today. We’ve all probably been there, or similar enough anyway. On the bright side, now that you’ve torn into it a bit you know what you’re dealing with and things should go much more smoothly when you go at it again.
Why the swap to manual though?

True, and having the same hubs isn’t stopping it from driving, it just means I still can’t drive all four wheels in reverse

I’m inferring from his other comment that he doesn’t get to drive all 4 wheels when in reverse.

Yeah, that’s what I’m telling myself. Now I know exactly what I need, and today was just a very inefficient tool acquiring day.
The auto hubs don’t actually lock every time, and they unlock when you start to back up.

I treed him. My ? posted a minute before his other reply, but I inferred the same once I saw it.
Ya learn something new everyday. I never realized auto hubs had the downside of not working in reverse, but it makes sense as I recall something about having to back-up to get them to disengage on the Pathfinder we had back in ‘87. Coincidentally the last true 4x4 I’ve had the pleasure of having in the family.
